GEN Radiant G Conference

Girls Empowerment Network’s Radiant G Conferences are statewide, multi-city events designed especially for thousands of girls* in grades 3-8 and the people who care about them. With a community building opening rally, an empowering dance party, and dynamic break-out sessions delivered both by our organization and our network of subject matter experts, girls get to be totally in charge of their day. They walk away inspired by what’s possible and with a new belief in their personal power.

Since 2008, Girls Empowerment Network has produced statewide, multi-city conferences with the goal of delivering our self-efficacy building curriculum to a vast number of girls at once. These empowering conferences create a space for thousands of 3rd - 8th grade girls to come together, be inspired, and walk away with a new belief in their personal power.

Formerly known as the ‘We Are Girls Conference’, and ‘Girls Now’ in the past, the return of our signature event marks an exciting moment at Girls Empowerment Network. It stands as a vital opportunity for girls who currently don't have access to our in-school programs to experience our transformative curriculum and discover their inner power!

This year, I’ve signed on to the Conference Planning Committee and would love to invite you to:

I am also excited to share a workshop for Adult Conference Attendee called LOVE and Bubbles.

Origin - Film Screening & Discussion

  • 1801 Main Street Houston, TX, 77002 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join us for a screening and discussion of Ava DuVernay’s film Origin.

Written and directed by Academy Award nominee Ava DuVernay, ORIGIN chronicles the tragedy and triumph of Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Isabel Wilkerson as she investigates a global phenomenon of epic proportions. Portrayed by Academy Award nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (“King Richard”), Isabel experiences unfathomable personal loss and love as she crosses continents and cultures to craft one of the defining American books of our time. Inspired by the New York Times best-seller “Caste,” ORIGIN explores the mystery of history, the wonders of romance and a fight for the future of us all. (https://www.originfilm.com/)

In case you haven’t read the book Caste, yet, the film is a great way to prepare for Our Old House: A Look at our America, Section 2 where we will shift our discussion toward the 8 Pillars of Caste as outlined by Isabel Wilkerson.

We are excited to join the Impact Hub Houston in it’s first Films for Thought - facilitated film discussion session.

At Impact Hub Houston, we believe in the power of film to spark meaningful conversations and inspire action. That's why we're launching "Films for Thought," a talk back series designed to engage our community in thought-provoking discussions about impactful and controversial films.

Theater Discussion: Stagolee and the Funeral of a Dangerous Word

STAGOLEE AND THE FUNERAL OF A DANGEROUS WORD

World Premiere

By Thomas Meloncon

The play takes place in an office in a small town in East Texas where the local NAACP chapter is planning a funeral for the “N word”. At the same time, a bigoted white man is on his way to that same office to have a frank discussion with the legendary Stagolee, a black man known for his swagger. The two men have had a fight at their workplace, and this “conversation” is actually a court-ordered intervention, facilitated by a visiting Jewish psychologist. This new play examines different points of view along the racial divide and does so without judgement, ultimately bringing its characters into a better understanding of each other. A world premiere production of nationally recognized Houston playwright Thomas Meloncon’s newest work.

Book Release | A Master Class on Being Human: A Black Christian & A Black Secular Humanist on Religion, Race, and Justice with authors Dr. Brad R. Braxton & Dr. Anthony B. Pinn

Please join Tracie Jae as she moderates a conversation between Drs. Brad Braxton and Anthony Pinn.

Beginning in 2020, Brad Braxton and Anthony Pinn exchanged a series of email conversations that together form the basis for the book A Master Class on Being Human: A Black Christian and a Black Secular Humanist on Religion, Race, and Justice (Beacon Press 2023). In this time of marked polarization in our communal life, the authors embarked on an experiment, attempting in-depth discussions that probed their deep differences about serious topics, with the ultimate goal of promoting constructive engagement, enhanced understanding, and more compassion among people with different identities, beliefs, and practices.

Master Class is an exploration of what it means to be human, drawing on each authors' expertise in philosophy, religion, and African American studies. The book covers seven issues of social importance relevant to these theological-philosphical groups, including non-theism, violence against Black Americans and the Black Lives Matter movement, and whether religion does or should have a public role.

The authors acknowledge the centuries-long opposition between Christian and secular humanist traditions. In their conversations, they seek to expose the assumptions each group makes about the other, with "intellectual rigor and compassion." While they don't claim that dialogue or mutual understanding is a panacea for the discord between the two groups, they do believe that the embrace of difference—not the elimination of difference—is an effective classroom for learning to be better humans. Their nuanced discussion lays the groundwork for constructive dialogue between all who wish to move from tolerance of differing opinions to celebration.

Intelligence at HGO (Group Tix)

Theater + Discussion

Houston Grand Opera is bringing the World Premier of Intelligence to Wortham Theater. Please join us for the performance and a post show conversation over a meal.

Show Details from HGO Site

The Civil War is raging, and the country is burning. Men are slaughtering each other on the battlefield, but it is two women who possess the deadliest weapon of all: Intelligence, made more powerful by its invisibility. Who would guess that Elizabeth Van Lew, from a prominent Confederate family, is running a secret pro-Union spy ring? That Mary Jane Bowser, born into slavery in the Van Lew household, not only has been taught to read and write, but is also possessed of a photographic memory? The HGO-commissioned world-premiere opera Intelligence, inspired by the little-known true story of these two unlikely spies, unfolds as Elizabeth sends Mary Jane to live in the Confederate White House. As Mary Jane uncovers the secrets of the Confederacy to share with Union military commanders, she also uncovers the secrets of her own history and identity.

Shared through a fusion of music, words, and dance, this new American epic is the creation of a powerhouse trio: composer Jake Heggie, librettist Gene Scheer, and director/choreographer Jawole Willa  Jo Zollar. The sensational cast is led by mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton as Elizabeth, with soprano Janai Brugger making her anticipated company debut as the brilliant Mary Jane. Acclaimed conductor Kwamé Ryan takes the podium for his HGO debut.

Run Time: 2 hours + 40 minute w/ one intermission

Post Show Nosh + Convo

What is the theater without someone to discuss it with?

Please plan to hang out with our group after the show to share in a meal and a conversation. Additional details to come.

Words of the Work - POSTPONED

POSTPONED - CHECK BACK FOR NEW DATES

Words have histories, and they are also dangerous. In some cases, they can be so dangerous that their history is also a story of how their meaning has been manipulated or even hidden by those in positions of power. Join us for this examination of the language related to the social justice and racial equity movement, and think critically about how we came to use certain words, how we currently use them, and whether or not other words might be more effective. Together we will explore the origin, evolution, and contemporary use of five phrases, over 5 weeks – affirmative action, critical race theory, reparations, gentrification, and redlining – and uncover how we relate to the social issues that these phrases address. Participants are invited to bring their own research, their deeply held beliefs, and their lived experiences, to contribute to the conversation.

This program is being offered IN-PERSON, and will NOT be recorded.

All times are CT. Please contact onlinelearning@junghouston.org with any questions.

Please register early. Programs with four or fewer participants are subject to cancellation, 48 hours prior to their start.
