Community Volunteer Opportunity
Join the Community Conversations Pilot @ The Houston Food Bank
The Houston Food Bank is launching a new Community Conversations pilot, held on the first Sunday of the month from 1–4 PM for the next three months. This is a chance to connect with fellow Houstonians, learn about the State of the Community, and collaborate in small group discussions. It’s a fun, meaningful way to engage, and you can sign up for one session or all three! Here is a link to sign up: https://www.houstonfoodbank.org/ways-to-give/give-time/volunteerwithhfb/
Registration is required in advance and takes about 10 minutes. I would love for members of The Quiet Rebel Community to join me on May 4th.

Dr. Clint Smith's More HUMAN Approach to American History
Explore one tragic story from American history through a lens of empathy and understanding, using the works of Dr. Clint Smith and The Quiet Rebel's More HUMAN Approach framework. This workshop offers a unique opportunity for reflection and dialogue, inviting participants to connect with the deeper layers of American history and explore their own role in creating a more just and equitable future.
This is a mixed-method workshop which will involve media presentation, time for introspection and reflection, along with small and whole group discussions.
"Epilogue" from Dr. Clint Smith's - How the Word is Passed (copies of select passages will be provided during the workshop)
"Your National Anthem" from Dr. Smith's - Above Ground (copies of this poem will be provided during the workshop)

Theater Talkback: Memoriam
Memoriam @ Main Street Theater - Houston
World Premiere
By Noga Flaishon
In the near future, Memoriam Inc. buys and sells memories, digitizing them for mass-viewership. Customers can rent memories and experience them fully, even feeling the sensations the original memory-holder felt: childbirth, joyful reunions, romantic wedding proposals – almost like watching a short movie but much more intimate and personal. Now Rachel, a buyer for Memoriam, is going after the most important and most personal memory acquisition she has ever sought: the memories of the last holocaust survivor on earth – who happens to be her own grandmother. A powerful, painful, loving story of family and what memories mean, who owns them, and what we owe to future generations.
Recommended for mature audiences due to sensitive subject matter and loud sounds.
Join us following the matinee for a discussion exploring the idea of “story” and how stories define us, impact us, and even manipulate us.
Panel Discussion: Intersections of Black Community, Art and Identity
The National Endowment for the Arts Big Read—a partnership with Arts Midwest—broadens our understanding of ourselves and our neighbors through the power of a shared reading experience. The goals of the NEA Big Read are to inspire meaningful conversations, celebrate local creativity, elevate a wide variety of voices and perspectives, and build stronger connections in each community.
Their Eyes Were Watching God
by Zora Neale Hurston
Houston, let’s read together! Alley Theatre’s NEA Big Read is a city-wide exploration of Their Eyes Were Watching God, the iconic 1937 novel by Zora Neale Hurston. Rooted in the power of storytelling, this program uses Hurston’s work as a lens to engage Black communities around themes of resilience, self-discovery, empowerment, and the preservation of cultural heritage.
Throughout February and March, the Alley will collaborate with partners across Houston to host events that amplify Black voices and experiences through literature, art, and community dialogue. Artists will guide participants to explore the challenges, triumphs, and rich history of Houston’s Black community.
